As we've mentioned, we're very excited that Daver Russell, Kevin Hankinson, and Lauren Fardig will be visiting our class this week to talk teaching and technology (with an emphasis on the former).
They all teach in public high schools, but each is very different from the others in terms of location, student body, available resources, and educational philosophy.
Kevin teaches math and language arts at a new school--International Academy West--located in White Lake, that follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, as described in this recent NY Times article. Kevin is an aggressive user of tech tools in his teaching, and promises to fill us in on what he's doing with skype and digital storytelling, to go along with some inspired work I've seen using blogs and wikis.
Daver teaches here in town at Huron High School, where some of you will be placed. Daver is one of those people with a truly interdisciplinary spirit, so whether you're in the science department or not, you should go and visit/observe him.
Some of you have been reading Lauren Fardig's Land of lolo blog, and if you're not reading it, I strongly suggest it. Lauren is teaching at Banana Kelly HS (yes, that's the real name!) in Bronx, NY. My group runs a web-based poetry activity, which has kept me working closely with lauren and her quite remarkable students. She manages to do remarkable things for and with her students, despite teaching in a school where too many of her kids are contending with serious pitfalls in their lives.
All three of these people are wonderfully creative, so come with questions, okay?
